August 8th – Mining Heritage Walk to High Rake Mine and Tideslow Rake, nr. Great Hucklow

Tuesday, August 8th 2017 starting at 7.00pm.

Leader: John Barnatt. Contact John at meets@pdmhs.com.

All welcome – no pre-booking required. Meet at 7.00pm on the road between Great Hucklow and Windmill, near the top of the access road to Milldam Mine (grid ref: SK174779).

A gentle 3 mile summer evening walk along one of the most important lead veins in the Peak District. We will first visit High Rake Mine, which was the site of a major PDMHS conservation project (led by John himself) from 2000-8. We will look at the remains of the buildings (including two engine houses!) and the ore processing areas, and we also have a massive shaft for you to peer down as well. You can read more about the history of High Rake Mine here.

We will then head up Tideslow Rake, which has been mined since at least the C13th, looking at various well-preserved features at this Scheduled Monument. We will return back down to our starting point along the rake. Optional drink in a local pub afterwards.
