As for the past several years PDMHS is planning to run free guided tours at Magpie Mine during the annual UK Heritage Open Days event. No need to book, just turn up.

The event is usually very well attended and the parking space at the entrance to the (private) track on Grin Low is limited.  However the site is on several footpaths. It's not hard to find the mine: just head for the two tall chimneys! 

Please don't use the private track from Grin Low to the mine, the small amount of parking at the mine will be occupied.

We normally only have guides on site for the HOD weekends (but Magpie Mine is open 24x365).

There are numerous mineshafts - all now blocked, or capped for safety - so there is no access to the underground workings. The most impressive features are the surface remains including the Cornish Engine House which dates from 1869, and the adjacent circular chimney (built in 1840 for a previous engine). The headstock and winding gear for the mine remains.
You can peer into the grated main shaft and, with a powerful torch, it's just about possible to see the water hundreds of feet below.

Your HOD guide will tell you the story of the mine, tales of the miners and the purpose of each of the historic features.

Sturdy footwear is advisable as there are steep slopes, steps and uneven ground with mining hillocks and (grated) mine-shafts.
